Vision Problems with Cataracts

For people who have cataracts, seeing through cloudy lenses is a bit like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. Clouded vision caused by cataracts can make it more difficult to read, drive a car (especially at night) or see the expression on a friend’s face.

Cataract Eye Surgery Questions

If you need a cataract surgery procedure, we are proud to offer some of the best cataract surgeons in Florida. The experts at Quigley Eye Specialists are more than ready to accommodate you and deliver compassionate, comprehensive care.

Do you offer laser cataract surgery?

Yes, we offer laser cataract treatment and diverse types of cataract surgery. Your consultation with one of our ophthalmologic surgeons will help determine the best course of cataract treatment for you.

When is the right time to consider cataract surgery?

Most cataracts develop slowly and won’t disturb your eyesight early on. However, over time, cataracts will impact your vision. When it starts affecting your quality of life, we recommend treatment.

Is cataract surgery covered by insurance?

Yes, cataract surgery is generally covered by insurance when medically necessary. However, premium lens options, such as those that correct astigmatism or reduce the need for glasses, often require an additional out-of-pocket cost. We will work with you to determine coverage and payment options.

What is the surgical process like?

Our surgeons use a technique called phacoemulsification, or small-incision cataract surgery, with anesthesia to ensure a pain-free experience. The surgeon will create a small self-sealing incision, break the cataract up into microscopic particles using high-energy sound waves and then suction the particles out. After cataract removal, the surgeon will implant the new lens to replace your natural lens, restoring your clear vision.

What types of lenses are available?

During your cataract evaluation, your surgeon will discuss your lens options, including:

Standard Lens: Covered by insurance, this is a basic lens with no advanced technology, meaning most patients will require prescription glasses after surgery.

Extended Depth of Focus Lens: This lens is ideal for those wanting improved distance and intermediate vision with minimal glare, especially in low-light situations like night driving.

Multifocal Lens: This premium lens option provides a range of vision, from near to intermediate and far, reducing the need for glasses. It is a popular choice for those looking for more visual freedom after surgery.

Toric Lens: Designed to correct astigmatism, the Toric lens improves distance vision.

Light Adjustable Lens: This lens gives you and your surgeon the ability to adjust the lens and optimize your vision based on your unique preferences and lifestyle requirements.

What if I have astigmatism?

If you have astigmatism, you may opt for a Toric lens, which is designed to correct astigmatism and provide sharper distance vision. Your surgeon will discuss this option with you during your consultation.
